Stalinism Day at Tel Aviv University

To the right, the President of Tel Aviv University's notion of academic research and scholarship
On March 25, 2009, Tel Aviv University ran a full-day indoctrination session in communism, misrepresented as an "academic conference" to discuss the history of the Israeli communist party. We had been posted numerous warnings about this before it was held.

Every single speaker at the conference was either a member of Israel's Stalinist party MAKI or a pro-communist fellow traveler. The most "moderate" speaker was Yair Tsaban, a leader in Israel's Marxist MAPAM party, and he was booed by the communists in the audience.

When challenged by a worldwide wave of public denunciation and criticism for allowing the campus to be used for such purposes, the president of Tel Aviv University, Prof. Zvi Galil, issued a defense of this communist indoctrination congress, defending it as a legitimate academic activity. (His letter was reprinted here). In part he justified it because the Zionist scholar Anita Shapira would be participating in it. But Shapira merely greeted the participants at the beginning of the "conference" and dd not lecture about the subject at hand.

News details about the conference had appeared in the media before it took place, including here and here. The complete program for the event, with the list of speakers, can be seen here. The defense by the Tel Aviv University president of the misuse of campus facilities for Stalinist indoctrination was all the more alarming when coming from the very same campus officials who had censored a student protest exhibit exactly a year ago about human rights abuses in communist China and had ordered the student exhibit shut down. Academic freedom at Tel Aviv University is curiously selective!

The content of the talks at the "conference" was exactly as expected. Several of the speakers were party henchmen from the Stalinist MAKI party and not academics at all. Representatives of the communist party were on the scene distributing party "literature" and propaganda books. Every single speaker celebrated and praised communism, and most spent time attacking Zionism, Israel and Israel's very existence, praising Arab terrorism as "resistance" to Zionist colonialism.

Among the speakers was Elana Kaufman, who teaches a pro-Arab "narrative" course at Israel's Open University. She had been a collaborator with the late pro-terror Marxist sociologist Baruch Kimmerling, best known for his long pseudo-academic fabrication of the history of the "Palestinian nation." She spoke at the conference about the communist party's wonderful role in organizing Arab resistance to Zionism. She denounced Zionism for coercing the Arabs to become dependent upon the marketplace and for stealing their lands. She hailed the communist party for organizing the early violent "Land Day" protests among Arabs to "protest" Israel's supposed policy of "inflicting injury" on its Arab population. This led to the party's greatest electoral victory, she said, in which it won 80,000 votes in 1976.

She was followed by Dr. Amal Jamal, currently head of the department of political science at Tel Aviv University. He bewailed the fate of the poor Arab communists in Israel. He objected that the communist party is first and foremost the communist party of Jews, a rather curious observation given its voter support and membership makeup, and objected that Arabs who wish to be communists also have to be Israeli.

He was followed by Samiach Al-Qassam, presented as a "Druse poet," whose lecture was supposed to be on "literature and politics." Instead, his talk was devoted to the thesis that Jews and Arabs could not be equal in Israel and so Israel should be dismantled and enveloped within a larger bi-national Palestinian state with an Arab majority. In other words, a sort of Middle Eastern version of Rwanda.

Al-Qassam denounced President Obama and ex-President Bush of the United States for trying to create a Palestinian state alongside Israel instead of a state that replaces Israel. He then launched a lengthy sycophantic celebration of how wonderful communists are, how they not only defended the downtrodden workers but even the middle class. He declared that the Israeli communist is the true patriot, whereas American capitalists are phony patriots. He then bragged about how he had been hosted by the Romanian dictator Ceauşescu and by Russian's Gobachev, although claimed that as a poet he feels somewhat constricted in formal communist discipline. Thus when he was in Romania he preferred to dine with his Romanian security service guide and not with Comrade Ceauşescu himself.

Later in the "open discussion" section of the "conference," Al-Qassam also bragged about how he had been arrested and later was on Israel's wanted list for his seditious and illegal activities. Al-Qassam insisted that Israel stop looking upon the Hamas and the Fat'h as its enemies and instead should look upon the Jewish political right, which he described as "racists," as the true enemy. To loud applause he added that while he understands the suffering of the family of Gilad Shalit, the Jews have to understand that there are 11,000 Palestinian "Gilad Shalits" imprisoned by Israel. In other words, Gilad Shalit is the moral equivalent of imprisoned mass murderers, terrorists, bombers and ordinary criminals in prison.

He was followed by Marxist Gadi Algazi, a radical anti-Zionist from Tel Aviv University's department of history. Algazi has long denounced Zionism as a form of colonialism and vilifies every attempt by Israel to defend its civilians from terrorists, including Israel's security fence. For a sampling of his anti-Israel propaganda writings, see this. His talk was devoted to celebrating the Arab "resistance" to Israel and to Zionism, a resistance that just happens to take the form more often than not of atrocities and terrorism.

Yair Tsaban, who had long served in the Knesset as a representative of the Marxist MAPAM party and later of MERETZ (into which MAPAM was merged) enraged the hostile audience, most of whose members made little secret of their violent anti-Israel political sympathies. He was the closest thing to a Zionist participating in the conference. Tsaban aroused the enmity of much of the audience when he suggested that commemorations for any suffering of Palestinians be separated from Israel's own celebrations of its Independence Day. For this he was booed and denounced as "anti-humane."

Dov Chanin, a Stalinist Knesset member from Israel's Maki-Hadash communist party, gave a dry boilerplate denunciation of Western capitalism as the true danger to human civilization, because capitalism is based on the pursuit of profit for its own sake. Communism, he insists, represents the future hope of humanity.

Tel Aviv University's Long Track Record of Pandering to Communism

At Tel Aviv University, one-sidedly promoting communism is "academic freedom," but protesting human rights abuses by Communist China is prohibited by the campus officials!

We recently posted a report on a one-day indoctrination session in communism to be held on the campus of Tel Aviv University this week, in which communism will be celebrated. While TAU officers are disingenuously insisting that the conference is merely ABOUT the communist party, a fast look at the program indicates that it is to be a one-sided CELEBRATION of communism, where all the speakers are either communists or pro-communists. The only non-Marxist is Prof. Anita Shapira, a Zionist scholar, but she is merely there to greet the participants on behalf of the School of the Humanities and otherwise will not lecture. The above poster represents the notion of balance and pluralism that seems to govern the thinking in some parts of Tel Aviv University!

Many of the speakers are officials in the Israeli communist party or academic faculty who are card-carrying communist party members. For an updated report on this "conference," go here.

The poster for the conference with the list of speakers, featuring a photo of Stalin and a hammer and sickle, can be seen here.

As you can see from that report, this is hardly the first time that Tel Aviv University collaborated with the Israeli communist party in its indoctrination activities.

However, an even MORE amazing story is the fact that Tel Aviv University has exercised self-censorship and suppressed freedom of speech to coddle communism and pander to communists. The news report is here.

It seems that an art exhibit was being shown on the campus of TAU last year in the persecution of the "Falun Gong" in China was depicted. The Falun Gong are a sort of meditation, exercise movement with some features of a religious cult. China has been brutally suppressing and persecuting members of the movement. Some of the artists in the exhibit were survivors of China's forced labor camps, and endured the tortures they depict.

The Chinese Embassy in Israel was not amused and complained to the heads of Tel Aviv University. In one of the most brazen acts of cowardice in the Western world, the university officials ordered the exhibit shut down in order to appease the Chinese communists!!!

The above news story reports:
'The decision to shut down the exhibit was made by the University's top management, and that the Chinese Embassy in Israel pressured the University in this regard. One of the works displayed at the exhibition, titled "Tragedy in China"."It is important to ask why the Chinese Embassy threatens a university because of an art exhibit," said Nitzan. "I think the answer is clear," he continued. "The exhibition displays paintings of the banned Falun Gong spiritual practice and the torture the practitioners in China are suffering from." '

See also this.

While the whole world protests the dhimmitude being exhibited by some European governments too cowardly to protect freedom of speech, here we have the spectacle of the heads of Tel Aviv University suppressing academic freedom and freedom of speech in order to mollycoddle Chinese communism.

This being the case, the decision to hold a one-sided celebration of communism and indoctrination into Marxism on the campus of Tel Aviv University this week hardly is a novelty!

If you are upset by this story, please take a few moments and let the heads of Tel Aviv University know what you think (addresses appear in next blog entry)

Tel Aviv University to be Converted to a Gulag (for a day)

Many of us have long suspected that Tel Aviv University (TAU) often serves as a communist re-education gulag, dominated by its post-Zionist anti-Israel far-leftists in whose classrooms no Zionist or non-leftist opinion may ever be expressed. But this coming March 25, 2009, it really will be a gulag! At least for one day! Israel's pro-terror communist party MAKI will hold its "congress," misrepresented as an academic conference, that day in the TAU law school, which has been much in the news recently for attempts at suppressing academic freedom there, gulag-style. The conference will consist of one-sided pro-communist indoctrination. Not a single anti-communist will lecture.

Tel Aviv University campus officials have agreed to allow campus facilities to be used for this "conference" of the Israeli Community Party, a party that has never gotten around to repudiating Stalin, Stalinism, or the Khmer Rouge. This is not a post-Purim joke, but for real.

The decision to hold the congress on the campus of Tel Aviv University was no doubt made thanks to the presence of a large number of open self-declared communists on the faculty there. Among those to speak at the communist convocation will be communist Prof. Yoav Peled of TAU's political science department and Prof. Gadi Algazi , who is on the faculty of the history department at TAU. They are joined by the far-leftist anti-Israel Prof. Daniel Bar-Tal, of the TAU psychology department, best known for his pseudo-academic research "proving" that Jews are racists and opposed to peace, based on the drawings of Jewish school children.

Other comrades to be organizing the dictatorship of the proletariat at the Tel Aviv University gulag include Uri Ram, a sociologist from Ben Gurion University, who thinks Israel's very existence is a crime against humanity. The party hacks from the communist party will also be addressing the congress.

The congress is being partially financed by the communist "Rosa Luxembourg Foundation," several different departments at Tel Aviv University, and posters advertising it are being disseminated in Israel, carrying a large hammer and sickle emblem. Professor Anita Shapira, who is a Zionist and not a communist, will greet the participants on behalf of the School of Humanities, but otherwise will not lecture them about communism. The fact that this indoctrination congress is nominally sponsored by various departments at Tel Aviv University is the true disgrace!

Now Israeli universities are pounding down the doors of the representatives of the taxpayers, asking for more handouts from the public coffers, as well as "shnorring" money from overseas donors. We certainly hope that Israel's fiscal officials are taking note of how the heads of Tel Aviv University are misusing public funds, and how they are turning campus facilities over to Stalinists.

Meanwhile, we suggest that all the campus cafeterias be shut down for the day to illustrate for everyone attending the Stalinist congress the starvation invariably produced by communism.

To right - candidate for tenure in political science at Tel Aviv University

PS: I wonder if they will endorse the resolution of the Palestine Communist Party's 7th Congress in 1932 that "the revolt of the Arab masses in Palestine against the imperialists had been and would in the future be accompanied by a war of annihilation against the Jewish minority..."
(Zachary Lockman, "The Left in Israel: Zionism vs Socialism," MERIP
Reports, July 1976, p. 8)

Followup - the Romance between the Israeli Communist Party and Tel
Aviv University

The poster that announces the conference carries a photo of Stalin and hammers and sickles. You can see it for yourself here.

Not a single anti-Marxist or non-Marxist is to speak, although Prof. Anita Shapiro, a Zionist professor, will give the opening greeting before the lectures begin. The spin doctors for Tel Aviv University are attempting to excuse the one-sided "conference" as ABOUT the communist party, but not a promotion OF the communist party. Yeah, sure. The list of lecturers, including several communist party officers and also university academics who are members of the communist party, belies this.

In any case, it is important to note that this is not the first romance between TAU and the communist party. In the past the university turned campus facilties over to the communist party so it could hold its "socio-economic college" lectures in political indoctrination there.

See these old postings of mine about that story:
July 23, 2004

Communists today lead the movement for a Second Holocaust of Jews. They seek the annihilation of Israel and its population. The communist countries have always been allied with Arab fascism and aggression and today support Islamist terror.

All of which might have been regarded by most people as more than a sufficient reason why a College of Communist Indoctrination should not operate within the auspices of Tel Aviv University.

But they would be wrong.

Today is the inauguration ceremony of the opening of the College of Communist Indoctrination at Tel Aviv University. Really. The official name of the "college" is the "Socioeconomic College," and it operates on the Tel Aviv University campus, although evidently not with direct funding by the Israeli taxpayer, at least not yet. The comrades will, however, be using the university facilities paid for by Israeli taxpayers.

The initiator of the College of Communist Indoctrination is Madame Gulag, Tamar Goszinsky, who was until recently the Stalinist Rent-a-Jew sitting in the Knesset as representative for the Hadash Stalinist Party. Hadash is an Old-Left anti-Israel Arab-national communist party, one that never quite got around to renouncing Stalinism.

Mademe Gulag has been unemployed, as are most people under communism, ever since her own party got tired of her hogging one of its parliament seats.
(She is one of the speakers at the TAU conference "on" communism next week
-- SP)

So she and her fellow commissar, a lawyer named Aviv Wasserman, came up with the idea. They decided they were sick and tired of the "capitalist hegemony in Israeli academia" (in their words see Haaretz July 23, 04), and you can see right away how someone who had spent the last few decades in some other galaxy might not be aware of the Far-Leftist hegemony that ACTUALLY operates in Israeli academia.

Students in this new re-education Gulag center to open at Tel Aviv University will be indoctrinated in the "theories" of Marxism that were totally debunked more than 160 years ago. They will learn the communist party's principles and its correct thinking about class struggle and other "social issues." The "college" will be administered by a pro-Hamas blogger named Efraim Davidi. Its "degree" will not be recognized as a bona fide academic degree, although it might be enough to get you a job in a Cuban torture facility.

The "faculty" at the "college" will consist of the usual Israeli Far-Leftist tenured radicals, including a Marxist economist from Ben-Gurion University, the extremist "Post Zionist" Moshe Zuckerman from Tel Aviv University, the Stalinist Dov Hanin who replaced Madame Gulag as the Hadash Party Rent-a-Jew (he will also speak at the TAU conference next week -- SP), some Arab non-academics whose academic credentials are that they are anti-Israel, and others. They do not get paid. I guess as their way of showing what happens to employees under communist regimes.

When challenged about their opening Felix Dzerzinsky College at Tel Aviv University (Felix Dzerzinsky founded the KGB under Lenin), the TAU campus commissars spout the usual "academic freedom" cliches, although nothing in academic freedom means free unpaid use of taxpayer financed campus facilities is an automatic entitlement for anyone off the street.

But there is a more important point I should have mentioned.

A few years back we posted a story about a senior lecturer at the business school at Tel Aviv University, associated with the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, who petitioned the university authorities on behalf of a group of religious women students to be allowed to us empty classrooms in off-hours to study Talmud and the weekly Torah portions. The university turned them down flat. THAT would have been inappropriate use of campus facilities, unlike setting up a Stalinist Indoctrination College on campus, run by the communist party apparatchiks.

Also, you may recall that when Tel Aviv University decided to accept a large donation from a Swiss industrialist to build a synagogue building on campus, some leftist faculty and students held angry protests against the decision, maintaining that a synagogue would pollute the largely secularist campus. I guess Judaism pollutes Tel Aviv University, but not Stalinism.

In The Spirit of Purim

But this is real:
A kosher alert from the OU:

OK. Everyone got it? The soup mix with the ham in it is not kosher.
(Obviously, the OU has to send this alert. Still, it's amusing.)
Funnier is why I kept this somewhere from two years ago, when it came into my inbox.

The Slow Awakening Of Britain's Leftist Jews

(Pictured: British writer Howard Jacobson)

Mindless Jew-hatred conveniently masquerading as mere criticism of Israel is not a new phenomenon by any means, but it's been rising to heretofore unimaginable levels in Britain - to the point where a number of left-wing British Jews have begun publicly moving away from their ideological soul mates.

First, for a taste of what passes for intellectual discourse among the British intellectual elite, consider the following tidbits from a London Review of Books symposium on January's Gaza war (more than dozen academics and writers, Jewish and non-Jewish, Israeli, British and American, contributed, with nary a sympathetic note sounded on Israel's behalf):

Eric Hobsbawm: "For three weeks barbarism has been on show before a universal public, which has watched, judged and with few exceptions rejected Israel's use of armed terror against the one and a half million inhabitants blockaded since 2006 in the Gaza Strip ."

Yitzhak Laor: "Israel is engaged in a long war of annihilation against Palestinian society. The objective is to destroy the Palestinian nation and drive it back into pre-modern groupings based on the tribe, the clan and the enclave ."

Conor Gearty: It is just possible the killings in Gaza may mark the end of Israel's disastrous plunge into militant Zionism. The key is Obama: will he collapse under pressure like most of his predecessors, or is there more to him? Let us assume he knows how senseless it is for the U.S. to collude in a crime of the kind going on in Gaza. There are ways of marking this without unleashing the pro-Israeli forces against him at too early a stage."

There's much, much more of this sort of thing, of course, and we're dealing here with tweedy intellectuals or those who imagine themselves as such, not the excitable and increasingly violent rabble - protesters, graffiti vandals and street thugs - who have sent the rate of anti-Jewish incidents in the UK skyward.

And so it is perhaps understandable that a growing number of Britain's leftist Jews are exceedingly uncomfortable with the constant comparisons of Israel to Nazi Germany and apartheid South Africa issuing mostly from the political precincts they still call home, and that several have made that discomfort known.

Most of them take great pains to note their longstanding critique of Israeli policy, their support for the Palestinians, their revulsion at Israel's allegedly inhumane behavior in prosecuting Operation Cast Lead, etc., but at least there's a budding recognition that a significant proportion of anti-Israel sentiment is anti-Semitic at its core and that most of it is found on the Left:

We'll end with an excerpt from an impassioned piece by the prominent British author Howard Jacobson (whose 1994 book Roots Schmoots is one of the wittiest and brutally honest attempts by a thoroughly secularized Jew to come to grips with Jewish culture and identity). Writing in the Feb. 18 edition of The Independent, Jacobson portrays the very air of Merry Old England as being suffused with hatred:

"[T]he hatred of Israel expressed in our streets, on our campuses, in our newspapers, on our radios and televisions, and now in our theatres. A discriminatory, over-and-above hatred, inexplicable in its hysteria and virulence whatever justification is adduced for it; an unreasoning, deranged and as far as I can see irreversible revulsion that is poisoning everything we are supposed to believe in here - the free exchange of opinions, the clear-headedness of thinkers and teachers, the fine tracery of social interdependence we call community relations, modernity of outlook, tolerance, truth. You can taste the toxins on your tongue.

"But I am not allowed to ascribe any of this to anti-Semitism. It is, I am assured, 'criticism' of Israel, pure and simple. In the matter of Israel and the Palestinians this country has been heading towards a dictatorship of the one-minded for a long time; we seem now to have attained it. Deviate a fraction of a moral millimeter from the prevailing orthodoxy and you are either not listened to or you are jeered at and abused, your reading of history trashed, your humanity itself called into question. I don't say that self-pityingly. As always with dictatorships of the mind, the worst harmed are not the ones not listened to, but the ones not listening.

"But responses to the fighting in Gaza have been such as to drive even the most quiescent of English Jews - whether quiescent because we have learnt to expect nothing else, or because we are desperate to avoid trouble, or because we have our own frustrations with Israel to deal with - out of our usual stoical reserve."

The Un-Koshering of Salt

Did you think only Jews use kosher salt? Obviously not. Most of us know that kosher salt is a specific type of salt, more coarse than table salt. We also know that it’s called kosher salt because its used in the koshering process. Well, one Christian barber thinks enough is enough. Christians shouldn’t have to use kosher salt. So coming soon is salt that’s been blessed by an Episcopal priest – I kid you not. Read more about it here.

Aljazeera's new Columnist: Ben Gurion University anti-Israel Extremist Neve Gordon

To right, Aljazeera's new columnist with Yassir Arafat

Aljazeera.com is the web site that is run by the Aljazeera print magazine, not to be confused with Aljazeera.net, which is marginally even worse. All are open instruments of the world jihad and Islamofascist terror. All are strongly opposed to any American or Western attempts at capturing Osama bin Laden.

The Aljazeera.com web site is a strong lobbyist on behalf of the Hamas, demanding that it be removed from the terrorism lists of Western countries, and that it be "recognized" and engaged in negotiations by the West. It openly demands that Israel be exterminated.

Aljazeera.com carries a subdirectory of articles under the heading "conspiracy theories." No, it does not mock conspiracy theories, like those of the 911 "truth" nuts, but rather publishes numerous articles proving how true and correct the world's nuttier conspiracy theories are, especially when they involve Jewish cabals. It loves reports of the supernatural powers of the Jewish lobby, supposedly dominating the world.

To right, a loyal fan of all the Aljazeera!

And under the category of commentators on "conspiracy theories" and all round celebration of jihad and Islamofacism, Aljazeera.com has a new columnist.

He is none other than Neve Gordon, a lecturer in political science at Ben Gurion University, in fact the current chairman of the department of political science there. At Ben Gurion University, Zionists and pro-Israel people may not teach in the department of political science. One lecturer who dared to hold pro-Israel dissident opinions was fired by Ben Gurion University for his incorrect thinking.

Gordon is best known for his calls for Israel to be destroyed as part of a so-called "one-state solution," more accurately actually a Rwanda solution of finality to the problem of Jewish existence in the Middle East. Gordon regularly denounces Israel as a fascist, terrorist, apartheid regime resembling Nazi Germany. His "academic record" consists almost entirely of anti-Israel hate propaganda. He has devoted enormous energies to serving as the Israeli apologist for Neo-Nazi Norman Finkelstein. Gordon's writings are so venomously anti-Jewish and anti-Israel that they are carried on the web sites of Holocaust Deniers and Neo-Nazis. Professor Alan Dershowitz wrote about Gordon in the Jerusalem Post on November 8, 2006: " It is my opinion that Neve Gordon has gotten into bed with neo-Nazis, Holocaust justice deniers, and anti-Semites. He is a despicable example of a self-hating Jew and a self-hating Israeli." Gordon is also vehemently anti-democratic and opposed to freedom of speech.

Gordon hates Israel and justifies the Arab terror against Israeli Jews. When his own university campus was under attack by Hamas rockets, Gordon denounced Israel for targeting the Gaza "university" that was serving as the warehouse for those very same rockets. Gordon was arrested when he entered Ramallah illegally to interfere with Israeli military anti-terror operations and to show his solidarity with Palestinian terroristsand mass murderers.

In recent months Gordon became a regular columnist at Aljazeera.com, where he has published articles claiming that Israel is opposed to peace and pursuing violence for the sake of violence in Gaza, claimed Israel is plotting to steal Arab lands, and described violent Palestinians as "a colonized people resisting colonization." You know, just in case Aljazeera would not be pro-terror and anti-Semitic enough, Gordon feels the need to help it along.

So here we have the spectacle of an anti-Semitic Israeli lecturer turning out Bash-Israel and Bash-the-Jews propaganda for one of the most openly anti-Semitic group of jihadniks on the planet. Ben Gurion University regards Gordon's anti-Israel hate propaganda as "scholarship" and "research" and granted him tenure on its basis, proving that serious academic standards no longer are upheld at Ben Gurion University.
